Psilocybin-containing mushrooms can be found in the wild in many parts of the world. They can be eaten fresh or dried, or brewed in a tea. Common sources include the P.cubensis mushroom and others of the genus Psilocybe. Nearly 100 species with varying levels of psilocybin have been identified.?? Psilocybin has been granted a breakthrough therapy designation by the FDA to be studied as a possible treatment for depression.?? Despite promising clinical application, psilocybin remains classified under  Schedule I  of the  Controlled Substances Act and is illegal to possess or sell in the United States, though it has been decriminalized in some parts of the country, such as Oakland and Denver. After ingesting psilocybin-containing mushrooms, it will take 20 to 40 minutes to start feeling the effects. By then, psilocybin will have broken down into psilocin which acts on serotonin receptors in the brain.?? The effects peak at about 90 minutes to two hours after ingestion. The bulk of the effects are felt during the first six hours??, which matches the timing of when the metabolite psilocin enters the bloodstream to be eliminated through the kidneys. Physical effects include nausea, yawning, headaches, and increased heart rate, blood pressure, and temperature.?? Mental effects include feeling relaxed and having introspective experiences that may feel spiritual as well as unpleasant effects like nervousness, paranoia, and panic reactions. Some studies and sources report that users can have long-term changes in personality, lasting for over a year. ??Some people who use psilocybin have reported flashback experiences long after taking mushrooms. Though typically not severe, there have been rare reports of people developing hallucinogen persisting perception disorder (HPPD) after taking psilocybin mushrooms, and this requires further study.?? How Hallucinogens Affect the Body How Long Does Psilocybin Last? The average half-life of psilocin is 50 minutes??. The half-life of a substance is how long it takes for half of the drug to be eliminated from the body. It generally takes five to six half-lives for a substance to be entirely eliminated from the system. In the case of psilocin, after three hours, about two-thirds of a dose has been eliminated through the kidneys in the urine. Psilocybin is metabolized more quickly by some people than others. Dosage is a large factor and so is the frequency of use, weight, and age. The experience is highly determined by the persons mindset and their physical setting, often referenced together as set and setting. A 2017 study of healthy adults found that the psilocin levels peak after about 80 minutes, corresponding with the average peak in effects after 90 minutes, but this varies across individuals.?? The immediate effects of using psilocybin wear off in six to 12 hours, though most people report continuing to feel the effects until they sleep and a glow the next day. Urine The standard five- and nine-panel drug tests ordered by most drug testing companies do not typically include tests for psilocybin, but companies such as Quest Diagnostics and NMS Labs do offer urine tests for psilocybin and one of its metabolites, psilocin, that could be purchased by an employer or probation office. Only small traces of the drug are detectable by a urine test for up to 24 hours after ingestion.?? Blood Blood testing for psilocybin is much less common, but it may happen under some conditions. However, the detection window is very brief, which means that the test must be administered within hours after use. Hair Like many other substances, magic mushrooms can be found in hair follicles for up to 90 days??. However, such tests may require larger hair samples in order to find detectable amounts of the substance. Factors That Affect Detection Time Determining how long shrooms stay in your system can be tricky. The amount of time it takes for the body to excrete psilocybin depends on many variables. Detection times are influenced by the species of mushroom. The type of psilocybin mushroom a person takes affects how quickly the metabolite is eliminated from the body. There are more than 100 magic mushroom species and they all have varying levels of psilocybin content, ranging from psilocybe liniformans with 0.16% to psilocybe tampanensis with 0.68% to psilocybe azurenscens with 1.78%. How soon psilocybin is eliminated from your body depends on dosage, frequency of use, type of mushroom, your metabolism, and factors such as your age, how much you weigh, your hydration level, and the health of your body systems. A look at some factors that can affect psilocybin metabolism include: Age: People over age 65 tend to have reduced blood flow to their kidneys and liver, which can delay the excretion of psilocybin.Body mass:  People with higher body mass tend to excrete psilocybin faster than those with low BMIs.Activity levels:  Psilocybin is excreted faster in physically active people with higher metabolism rates.Hydration levels:  Water can speed up the excretion of psilocybin.Liver and kidney function: Having liver or kidney disease can slow down the time it takes for psilocybin to pass through the body.Ingestion vs injection: The half-life for intravenously injected psilocybin is much faster than if it is consumed by oral ingestion. When injected, the drug may be cleared from the body in about seven to eight hours. Psilocybin is not tested for on the typical urine drug screen used by employers. If use is suspected, however, specific tests for it may be ordered. How to Get Psilocybin Out of Your System Drug tests of psilocybin and psilocin involve screening urine samples using High-Performance Liquid Chromatography or Tandem Mass Spectrometry. The report is usually made available between four to eight days. The more shrooms you ingest, the longer the psilocybin remains and can be detected. Drinking water can speed up the elimination of psilocybin, but not in any way that is significant for people trying to avoid detection on a drug test. The only way to get psilocybin out of your system is to discontinue use and allow your body time to metabolize and eliminate the substance. How Long Drugs Can Be Detected in Your System Symptoms of Overdose Use caution whenever handling wild mushrooms. Make sure that you get all mushrooms that you pick yourself looked over by an expert before eating them to ensure proper identification. Even experienced mushroom hunters can mistake a highly poisonous mushroom for the one they intended to gather. Mushroom poisoning can result in catastrophic liver damage and death unless there is immediate access to a liver transplant.?? While physical overdose on most correctly identified species of psilocybin-containing mushrooms is not likely, some people do have what is called a bad trip, in which they experience confusion, loss of awareness, and exposure to challenging psychological material. A bad trip is largely a product of set and setting, but can also be an indicator of a need for more in-depth psychological support. Many people find that bad or difficult trips are minimized through attending to their basic physical needs before and during the experience, keeping overstimulation to a minimum, using lower doses, and checking in with a trusted friend.?? That said, psychedelic experiences may bring psychological material into your awareness that you find challenging, and it is also helpful to be aware of that in advance and have a plan for working with it. If you are someone with a trauma disorder or other ongoing psychological condition, speak to your psychologist before taking psilocybin. Getting Help While psilocybin may have a low potential for physical dependence, that does not mean that psychological addiction is not possible. Mexican-American Cesar Chavez (1927-1993) was a prominent union leader and labor organizer, and he single handedly organized impoverished migrant farm laborers in the California grape fields. Over two years, Chavez spent his entire lifetime savings of $1,200 creating a small social service organization for Delanos field laborers. Chavez founded the UFW Association in 1962. His union joined with the agricultural workers organizing committee in its first strike against grape growers owners in california. Thesis- In april 1962, Cesar Chavez single handedly organized a migrant farm laborers in the california grape fields. The historical impact is that Cesar Chavez is known for his effort to gain better working conditions for the thousands of workers. The triumph is the success of Cesar Chavez work and the tragedy is that his attitude and beliefs changed over time. Origin- For more than a century farm workers have been rejected a decent life in the fields and communities of california agricultural valleys. In the 1960s things were beginning to change beneath the surface. Within another 15 years more than 50,000 farmworkers were protected by the union contracts. Over time farm workers were being led by Cesar Chavez and were able to call upon allies in other unions in churches and in communities group affiliated with growing the civil rights movement. Development- Grape pickers in 1965 was being charged an average of 90 cents per hour plus 10 cents more for picking baskets. State laws regarding working standards, were simply ignored by growers. And one farm boss made the workers drink out of the same cup, or they were forced to pay a quarter per cup. And there were no bathroom breaks. Farm Workers have to get used to of the conditions because they work in heat all day. Historical event- In september 8 in 1965 cesar chavez started a strike called delano grape strike. The strike was about grape growers protesting about the poor pay and conditions they get from working. The filipinos ask cesar chavez who mostly led the latino farm workers ask him to join the strike. Cesar and the leaders of the NFWA believed it would take years before their union was ready for a strike. But he also knew how growers historically pitted one race against another to break field walkouts. Cesar’s union voted to join the Filipino workers’ walkouts on Mexican Independence Day, September 16, 1965. From the beginning this would be a different kind of strike. The strike started in 1965 and ended in 1970. I am from different areas in the United States such as Missouri, Utah and Pennsylvania, which is where I was born. I have never been in trouble with the law nor really interacted with it so I can’t really say much. I will say that in Pennsylvania I use to live by Erie which had a pretty high crime rate and have been in the less admired parts of town or what people call the ghetto. I always saw the news of shootings and robbing mostly within that area. I was always upset by it, but I realized there was nothing I could do as a 10 year old. Missouri and Utah where I lived hardly had any crime I have experienced. The main issue there was speeding. My interest in Criminal Justice is mainly looking into reasons people do crime or using it in a social context since I plan on being a counselor and I know the psychological effects of crime on people, but not the reason or the idea why people continue on with certain crimes even though they know that the outcome won’t come in their favor. I also would like to see the different kinds of relationships between the police and the community. I also seek the different types of stigma that people have of the police such as seeing them as oppressors or power hunger people. I also would like to see the various of way that the law is interpreted and used on a case by case bases. True Grit: Male Companionship vs. Female Companionship In Charles Portis’ classic western novel, True Grit, Mattie Ross recounts her adventures as a young girl, seeking retribution for her father’s murder. Throughout the novel we see Mattie’s internal development from a young girl to a strong and wise woman. It is evident from the beginning of the novel that Mattie is extremely fond of her father and looks up to him with the highest regards. As her father mounts his horse to set off to Fort Smith with Chaney to purchase ponies, Mattie proclaims that he â€Å"might have been a gallant knight of old† (14). Much like a knight, her father is courageous, thoughtful and kind-hearted, which is shown by his gesture to help Chaney. He is a man virtue, but his views of the world are ‘old’ and outdated and in the end, lead to his demise at the hands of Chaney himself. This would be the last time Mattie would see her father alive again. She was raised mostly by her father, having her morals and values instilled by him; he raised her to be strong-willed, intelligent and independent, much like the men of their time. After the untimely death of her father, Mattie seeks revenge upon Chaney. In order to carry out her quest, she would need help. She sought out the aid of the toughest deputy in the district, U. S. Marshal Reuben J. Rooster† Cogburn, as he is â€Å"a man with true grit† (59). The relationship between Mattie and Rooster starts off rocky, with neither of them truly trusting the other, and Rooster trying to escape her presents several times, they eventually grow a bond between them, though neither of them would ever admit to it. Rooster becomes fond of Mattie when she shows her toughness and determination, she reminds him a little of himself; she has grit. Her true grit is shown when she comments on the robbers’ cabin. Even though it is worn down, dark, dirty and surrounded armed guards, she says they are â€Å"rather cozily fixed† because they have a warm fire and delicious turkey to eat; she sees the bright side despite all the negative things (131). Mattie truly enjoys Roosters company because he does not treat her like a girl but rather, an equal; he does not go easy on her or give her the upper hand, which is just the way she prefers to be treated. He is constantly challenging her to prove herself and makes her stronger. Her trust in Rooster is cemented when he stand up for against LaBeouf by threatening him with his gun, unless he stops whipping Mattie. Rooster becomes somewhat of a father figure for Mattie; he is truly the only man she can rely on. From an early age, Mattie is surrounded by powerful, passionate men and lacks a strong female figure in her life. Although her mother is present throughout her life, she plays a very minimal role, she is more of a background character, Mattie learns almost very thing she knows from her father. She was brought up by a male, instilling masculine traits in her, and after the passing of her father, Mattie migrates to another strong male figure, Rooster. Every female character that Mattie comes across within the novel, her mother, Mrs. Floyd, Victoria, and Grandma Turner, is rather unremarkable. Each is indifferent, uneducated, not respected, and lives to service men in some way or another. But Mattie is the complete opposite, she is predominantly more masculine; she seeks revenge through violence, she can be cold and emotionless, she is strong and independent, she is smart and witty, traits which were uncommon for the women of her time. Mattie was in charge of her family finances, rode horses and shot guns, activities all largely associated with men. She enjoys being a women with her resilient personality that causes the men around her to constantly push her and challenge her; as Mattie sets off for her adventure Lawyer Daggett tells her that â€Å"Fort Smith is no place for a young girl alone, not even a Mattieâ€Å" which inclines her to push forward and prove him wrong, much like any man of that time would have done (26). It is her primal upbringing that makes Mattie possess more male qualities and allows her to communicate better with men. Being surrounded by men who are strong and passionate and important to her, along with her childhood upbringing it is clear that Mattie is much more masculine and audacious. It is because of all these factors that Mattie prefers the company of men over women. In a male dominate world Mattie Ross strives to be drive from the average women; she chooses to be strong, independent, smart and to surround herself with male companionship and those like herself, those with true grit.
